Learning to Dance

by EvelynAnn Bruno

What do you do with a retired racehorse named Salsa? Well, you take her out dancing, of course!

Julie Parent was looking for just the right dressage prospect and after much searching a dear friend and Equine Massage Therapist Betsy Novotny, suggested Julie contact Thoroughbred Placement Resources (TPR). Head Trainer, Kimberly Godwin Clark suggested Julie go to foster facility Six M Farm to see what was available. Salsa (barn name Elsa) was adopted by Julie Parent January 31, 2015.

Elsa was foaled on Cinco de Mayo in 2011 and is a Pennsylvania bred. With only four career starts, she never hit the board, making her a lightly raced prospect with a well rounded education! “Kim said she was super sweet in the stall with a kind eye, and a very nice mover. That was one of my key criteria, since I was looking for a horse that I could train in dressage,” commented Julie.

Elsa is not Julie’s first Off-Track Thoroughbred (OTTB), she is her second. After her first OTTB mare, Julie did not expect to be lucky to find a horse as wonderful as Elsa. With her graceful gaits and natural self carriage, Elsa has proven to be a classic Dressage horse. As a bonus, she is an “in your pocket” horse. “She is a nuzzler and a lover. She is so very elegant under the saddle and has that ‘look at me’ presence about her!” exclaims Julie.

A Wonderful Partnership

Elsa and Julie are a match made in heaven. When asked if she would adopt another OTTB, Julie whole heartedly replied, “absolutely!”

The pair competed in their first dressage competition at Chesapeake Dressage Institute on August 20, 2016, scoring 63%! For those who are not in the dressage world, a score that high is considered “satisfactory” ride! Remember, Elsa came off the track just one year ago. The pair not only won their class, but the Introduction B division! Congratulations Division Champions!
TPR is thankful for Julie’s dedication to Elsa, and for providing her with a great second career and a loving home. This is just one more example of the success an OTTB can offer when placed in the right hands! If you are looking for your next horse, consider a Thoroughbred and you’ll be glad you did!
