Birdie was horribly abused before coming to TPR. Although we gave him extensive training, he is not a good riding horse. Despite his past experiences, he is kind and loving. Birdie’s relationship with Wills has enabled him to gain confidence and let go of some of his fear.

Wills is a very insecure horse. He believes you run from danger and ask questions later. Suffering from EPM, Wills has been treated by our great medical team, but this condition has further depleted his extremely fragile confidence.

Putting these two friends together has created amazing results. They have formed an incredible bond that has shown incredible benefits for their health and well-being.

We continue to pursue finding adopters for both horses, but un-rideable horses are extremely difficult to place so it’s been no surprise that they are still here. In 2018 we made the decision that we would keep them together, offering them for adoption only as a pair. This makes the prospect of finding them a home even more difficult, but it’s in their best interest to stay together.

We held a fundraiser in 2018 that raised the funds to cover the cost of their care for 2019. This enabled us to help more horses such as Nora who is featured on the front page of this newsletter. We also attracted several monthly donors who support the cost of their care serving as “foster parents” of Birdie and Wills. The expenses for the proper care of a horse in our area are $600 per month and that’s being extremely conservative. Thoroughbreds require more hay, more grain, protection for their feet in addition to the regular required maintenance such as vaccinations, deworming and dental care. The costs add up quickly but our donors have ensured that Birdie and Wills continue to enjoy a happy and healthy life together!

Overdriven Queen

Overdriven Queen

When a horse is badly trained and has become difficult, what will happen to her?

This is exactly what has happened to Queenie.  She is a sweet, kind mare who has been frightened by faulty training and handling after she left racing.  Now, someone must get her on the right “track”.  Excuse the pun, but horses who are afraid and difficult to ride are in a very vulnerable position.  Through no fault of their own.  They need an extremely experienced and patient trainer and rider who can not only show them that everything will be alright but get them on the right track.  Then we have to find the right adopter who can continue on with her training so she can regain her confidence and thrive.

This takes a lot of time, but we feel horses like Queenie are worth it.  First and foremost every single retired racer is an Ambassador of the breed.  Whether the horse is fantastic and wonderful to ride or seemingly crazy and dangerous.  What image do you want retired racers to have?  One of the biggest hurdles is demand for retired racehorses.  The racing industry keeps breeding and racing them, if there isn’t a demand for them after their careers end, what will happen to them?

That’s where you come in.  Kimberly Godwin Clark is an experienced rider who is willing to get on horses like Queenie and give them the turn around they need.  We need you to help us finance it.  The cost of the riding, training and stabling is covered, but we still need to provide, hay, feed, bedding, veterinary and farrier to make this work.

Cloud’s Honor

Cloud’s Honor

Cloud’s Honor made the difference for countless horses.  Now you can make the difference for her.

Cloud’s Honor’s winnings financed the creation of Thoroughbred Placement Resources, Inc.  and its operation for in it’s first years as it quickly grew to place an average of 150 racehorses per year–most of them from Maryland tracks, most of them transitioning into a new, productive life.  She has done so much to help retired racehorses.  In 2011, Off Track Thoroughbreds wrote a story on “Graycie”.  You can read it here.

A Future for Nora

A Future for Nora

Make the difference for a wonderful young horse who has given her all.

No Refunds or Nora as we call her, retired from racing at the age of 3 with chips in her knee. Without surgery and rehabilitation, Nora would not be sound.  Due to the generosity of donors, the surgery was successfully performed.   Now we must cover the cost of a year of rehabilitation and healing followed by retraining and then finally evaluation for placement in her forever home.

Caring for horses is expensive so we need your help during this critical time in Nora’s life.

Donate and help cover the cost of her care.  Making it a monthly donation will provide security for her recovery rehabilitation.

Experience the satisfaction of knowing you made a tremendous difference for this very special girl.
